Here’s my question for your blog.
Paul Burri 09/30/07 @ 10:45 amIt is my opinion that one of things that’s wrong with our society today is that no one seems to be able to accept responsibility for their actions. I had a recent experience where a person intruded on my space and when I made a loud complaint about it, merely wanted to give me several excuses about why he had done what he had. I didn’t want an excuse; I wanted an apology. He (and his generation) seem to think that if you have an excuse, that’s enough - no apology necessary.
Similarly, slip and fall on a wet spot in the grocery store? Sue the store. What about walking around the spot? What about notifying the manager? Etc.
Your comments?
Paul,
I agree with you that nobody accepts responsibilities for their actions these days. I would, however, disagree with your assertion that this is a trait exhibited by a certain generation - I think it has totally taken over our culture - young and old.
Perhaps it has something to do with the way we communicate - I understand that those just graduating from college are having a lot of difficulty in the work place, specifically in the interview process, as they are only used to electronic communication and are often unskilled at face-to-face interactions.
While this is amplified for the younger generation, it is clear that people of all ages are communicating over email, and thus losing the ability to negotiate the in-person world - which includes cutting people off in traffic (where I see a large spike in entitlement issues,) in the market - any place where they have to react in real-time, and not sit and ponder over syntax.
Add a society overloaded with attorneys, and you have a society where people would rather pick up the phone to call their lawyer than ask their neighbor to move their car out of their driveway.
What to do is the question, for which I do not have a great answer. Perhaps those of us who are able might try educating someone in that scenario. Say to the person, “While I hear why you believe that you did it, I don’t hear that you’re sorry that you did it. If you own it, I can accept it.”
Hopefully this will not bring about another problem we have in our society - unjustifiable violent outbursts.

Hillary 09/30/07 @ 11:11 amThe process of taking full responsibliity has been very much inhibited in recent years. I think it is an indication of a lack of self confidence. In 1961 John F. Kennedy took fulll responsibility for the US participation in the Bay of Pigs. He declared it was his mistake to totally accept the recommendation of the military. However, this is a rare instance of confident honesty. We would all be in a better place if we took responsibility for our actions. It proves humanity.
Best, Jack
